**How High should you mount your TV on the wall? Great question. Let’s get after it.**

In order to determine the ideal mounting height of your TV, we first need to know the size of the TV, the viewing distance from the TV, the eye level height from the floor and the reclining sitting angle.

**Size of the TV (TVS)**

The size of your TV greatly effects the TV mounting height. When you buy a TV the size is marked on the box like 42″, 55″, 60″ etc. If you have an existing TV and do not remember the size then you can measure it . You can find the size of your TV by measuring it diagonally and just the screen not the bevel.

**Viewing Distance (VD)**

The Viewing distance also contributes to the mounting height of your TV and is the distance between the TV screen and where you are sitting. The viewing distance can be based on the size of your television for optimal viewing or it can be measured from where you sitting to the wall where the TV will be mounted(in inches). The optimal VD can be calculated from the following formula:

**(1)Viewing Distance (VD)=TVS*1.67. **This is the optimum TV Viewing distance which is based on your TV size or it can be measured if you can’t sit at the optimum distance because of your room layout. See side view pic below.

For example if your TV size (TVS) is 55″ then the optimal Viewing Distance (VD) should be 92 inches (55*1.67).

**Eye Level Height from the Floor (ELH)**

Your eye level also contributes to the TV mounting height and is the distance, in inches, of your eyes from the floor while you are sitting watching TV. You can easily measure this from the floor to your eyes. For example when i sit on my couch my eye level from the floor is 40 inches.

**Reclining Angle (RA)**

The reclining angle also effects the height of mounting your TV. If you sit up straight at your seat or couch while you are watching TV and your torso forms a 90 degree angle with the floor then the reclining angle is zero. If you lay back then the reclining angle is not zero and is measured from the vertical. In other words the more you recline the higher the TV mounting height. See side view pic below. Couch manufacturers reclining angle range for casual sitting is 10-15 degrees.

**TV Mounting Height (TVMH)**

So now that we know all the parameters that contribute to the TV mounting height we can calculate it with the following formulas:

(2)TV Mounting Height (TVMH) =0.22*VD+ELH**
**This formula assumes 12.5 degrees of reclining angle for simplicity and is the distance in inches from the floor to the middle of the TV. If you want to find the height between the floor and the bottom of the TV, then measure the vertical height of your TV divide it by 2 and subtract it from the above result.

As a rule of thumb , a 42 in television should be mounted about 55 inches from the floor to the TV center, a 55 in TV should be 60 inches, a 65 in should be 65 in and a 70 in television should be mounted about 67 in from the floor to the center of the screen.

A more accurate formula is the following:

TVMH=tan(RA)*VD+ELH

Please notice on the above formula, that if the tan(RA)=0 which means that there is no reclining angle or you sit up straight, then the TV Mounting Height equals to the Eye Level Height.

For example when I sit on my couch my **ELH** from the floor is 40 inches and the **VD** is 92 inches (see previous example) so my **TVMH** is 0.22*92+40=60 inches from the floor to the midpoint of the TV. So here is a table:

TV Size | Floor to TV Center+ELH (40in) | Viewing Distance |
---|---|---|

42in | 55in | 70in |

55in | 60in | 92in |

65in | 65in | 109 |

70in | 67in | 117 |

Formula 1 is based to about 30 degrees of viewing angle that are within the limits of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, THX and manufacturers’ recommendations for 16:9 HDTV’s.

Formula 2 is based on the average reclining angle of about 12.5 degrees from vertical ( sitting up straight) for casual sitting. Manufacturers range for casual sitting is 10-15 degrees.

I have a t.v set of 43 inches, having a drawing room as long as 225 inches. The ELH is about 42 inches. At what height should I mount T.V to view the T.V with minimum stretch ?

Hi I have 65″ flat TV eye level 42″ distance from TV 151″

What is the Mounting Height?

Thanks!!!!

Hello. I have a bit of a problem because I have a small living room with two sofas facing each other. I must mount the TV above the smaller sofa. The sofa back measures 34″ in height, so the bottom of the TV must be several inches above that. The viewing distance is 94″-104″ depending if I am sitting up straight or reclined back. The TV is 58″. What is the optimal/minimal height at which I should mount the TV?? Thanks so much for your help.

I appreciate you posting all of this for information for us. I am wondering how to mount a TV to be watched from both a sitting position and viewing from a recliner (not just slouching). Is there a midpoint TV height calculation that accommodates both viewing positions? I would appreciate you showing me how to calculate for a blended viewing position for a 75″ TV, 9′ VD, seated 39″ ELH but also allowing for viewing when in reclining position at the same VD. Thank you for your help.

Samsung 50” UHD TV, viewing distance 140” and eye level 39”. How high should the center of my TV be?

39+140*0.22=70 inches

Hi there,

Can you please help me figure out the best mounted position for my TV?

TV Size=49 inches

Eye height=46 inches

Viewing distance= 130 to 150 inches

Kind Regards

TV Mounting Height =Eye Height +(Viewing distance *0.22)=46in+(130in*0.22)=74.6in. But you can move closer to your TV because the optimum Viewing Distance for a 49in TV is 82in(VD=TVS*1.67=49in*1.67=82in). So if we calculate the TV mounting Height with the optimum Viewing distance then TVMH=46+(82*0.22)=64in from the floor to the middle of the TV.

Trying to find height to mount 85 inch tv

Try 70in from the floor to the middle of the TV.

Thanks for pointing out how an angle of 12.5 degrees from vertical is the usual angle that TVs are being mounted on your walls. My family has a pretty good posture overall, so I would think that our sitting eye level will be great at this angle. I will be sure to get professional installation services so that they can mount our TV at this exact angle so that we can have a better viewing experience.

Viewing distance : 158 inch ( about 4 meters )

Tv size: 65 inch

I may be missing something in your assumptions…

1) are you assuming people are watching TV in recline position and therefore eyes angled up and/or a tilt mounted screen positioned at an angle? If so, what are those assumptions? If not, then I dont see how the formula height is not too high as its not at the middle of sight.

2) the “TV size” youre asking for…do you mean corner to corner, or do you mean height? My TV is 65 inch corner to corner but only 33 inch height. It would seem the height is the relevant number as it tells you the midpoint at 16.5 Inches for midpoint.

The formula assumes that you recline 12.5 degrees on your chair. As for the TV size is always the diagonal (corner to corner)size of the TV

What height should the soundbar be installed at? Informative article, great website, thank you!

Right under the TV (use the TV mounting calculator to find the mounting height of your TV

I gather that the recline angle refers to the head position.

If the reclined seat has no head support, are there any studies on what head angle is typical or ergonomically optimal for a given back recline angle? Do they always match for a 10-15 degree range in back recline?

For a 15 deg reclined couch back having relatively soft cushions in front (and underneath) and no head support, how does a typical slouch-on-the-couch (rounded back) translate into comfortable head angle for these calculations?

Agree. The illustration has a viewing angle pointed up at 12.5 degrees, however when I’m reclined like that my head isn’t inline with my body (as if I have a neck brace on). I look straight ahead, close to 90 degrees from the floor if possible. Next time you recline on the couch, brace your head perfectly inline with your body – is that how you’ll truly be looking at the tv? Have someone else do it and observe how they naturally hold / tilt their head.

HOW YOU GET THE 0.55 value which is used to finding out the VD.

(1)Viewing Distance (VD)=TVS/0.55 is based to about 30 degrees of viewing angle that are within the limits of the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, THX and manufacturers’ recommendations for 16:9 HDTV’s.

I have a shed of size 80m x 10m. I opt to go for p6 video display.all the persons are expected to sit on the floor.what should be the mounting height do that there shall be no strain on the head.

eye level

I mounted my 65″ Samsung Curved TV at about 52″ from the bottom TV base to the floor. My viewing distance is about 120 inches. was my TV placed correctly or is it to high?

for a 65in the tv mounting height should be at a 65in from the floor to the middle of the TV assuming that your Eye Level Height is 39in from your couch and 118in is your viewing distance. So if you divide your height of your TV by 2 and subtract it from 65in (which is to the middle of the TV) it should give you the distance from the floor to the bottom of your TV. Hope this helps

I have 65′ flat tv , viewing distance is about 17 feet and bottom edge of tv is at 55.5 inch from floor ..is this setup too high??

no is not

Hi I’m looking to hang a 75 inch tv that will be 10 feet from the sofa. The tv is 38 inches high. What is the proper height?

68in from the floor to the middle of the TV

I’m looking to hang a Samsung 9000 4K Flat screen TV. Top of the line. I’m 9′ 1/2″ feet from the unit although have no idea how high I need to be for the best view? Wall mount came Fedx today and hope to install the right height off the sofa site.

Try 65in from the floor to the center of the TV or 45in from the floor to the bottom of the TV

We have a 65″ tv and we sit apx 8 feet from the tv. It’s a large wall, where on the wall should we mount the tv? Thanks

Try 60in to the middle of the TV

Looking to put a 32″ on the wall in the bedroom. Whats to formula for that install? I figure most of the time it will be viewed while laying down, head propped up. Reclining angle will most likely be >30 degrees.

This is a very helpful post regarding mounting height. Actually, mounting height is one of the big questions for someone who just bought his flat screen TV. It’s really hard to figure out the right height if you don’t have any idea and you don’t know that such computations exists. The best way to enjoy watching on your flat screen is being at the right position, having the right height, and looking from the right distance because it won’t cause your eyes to sore and your back to strain.

Does the “mounting height” mean the middle of tv screen should be at that height?

39 + (136 * 0.22) = 68.92

68.92 inches – top, bottom, or middle of tv ?

So, I tried the formula but am a bit confused… My TV Size is 60 inches, My Viewing Distance is 130 inches, and My Eye Level Height is 42…. How high should my TV be? Thank You.

The height calculations provided are too high according to THX standards where “Try not to place the screen too high on the wall – viewers should not have to look up more than 15°.”

Your calculations state then with using a 65″ tv with a viewing distance of 10ft and ELH of 39″ that the TVMH is 65″ (to the middle of the TV); to change this to the top of the tv one would add 20″ for a 40″ high 65″ tv

65″ + 20″ = 85″

Using THX calculations using the same parameters would place the top of the TV no higher than 71″ for optimal height.

tan 15 degrees = x [height] / 120″ [length]

x=32″

ELH of 39″ + 32″ = 71″ max height to top of TV

http://www.thx.com/consumer/home-entertainment/home-theater/hdtv-set-up/

You got the wrong angle. The angle in the formula is the reclining angle not the viewing angle. In other words if you sit up straight the TV should be mounted at eye level if you recline in your chair or couch then the TV will have to be mounted higher. The viewing angle is bet 15-30 and is taking care of by the viewing distance (15d for THX and 30d for the Society of Motion Picture Engineers)

Hi,

This post is great!! I can’t seem to do the math right either. Could you please let me know what the TVMH (center of the TV) should be from the ground for the below measurements? Thanks!

WHAT SHOULD BE WALL MOUNTED HEIGHT

Hi,

Great post, thanks

Could you help me work out the height needed to mount my tv please?

TV size 47inches

ELH 39.5inches

VD 102 inches

Many Thanks

Hi Gareth

Using tvmh=elh+(vd*22) where elh=39.5in and vd=102in. tvmh=39.5+(102*0.22) so the TV Mounting Height should be 62in to the middle of the TV

Am I missing something? Sorry if this is a dumb question.. But shouldn’t your formula include the mounting angle of the tv from the wall? (i.e. when it’s in the high position, because I assume you are slouching back with a large viewing angle)?

The mounting angle of the TV from the wall does not affect the TV mounting height

This article is pretty good to read. Great!!

Thanks for sharing, I would like to post it on my Twitter to share with my friends?

Hi. I’ve a 55″ LED TV with an ELH of 36″ and a VD of 198″. Not to sure how to calculate the correct height from those formulas as my VD is twice the ideal distance for my TVS?

Hi Chris

use 55in from bottom of the floor to bottom of the TV

Good info. But isn’t looking upward at the TV likely to cause neck pain? Also, the verb should be “lie” back, not “lay” back.

Hi, and thanks for the formula.

Hi Dave

Assuming a reclining angle of 12.5 degrees(tanΘ=0.22) then your TVMH should be:

TVMH=(0.22*150)+39in

TVMH=72 inches to the center of the TV from the floor

Hi there,

I have a 55 inch flat screen. VD is 11ft (132″) and the ELH of 3ft 38″. Can you advise of the tv height.

Great web site as well. Merry Xmas from Oz!

Assuming a 12 degrees of reclining your TV mounting height should be 38+132*.22 =67inches

1 First would like to derive formula if the VD is more than the expected. In case of Lodge, how did you derive 0.4 factor!!

Mine is

12 ft i.e 144″ from wall

40 inch tv ( height is 22″)

ELH : 40″

What TVMH here?

Thanks

Sunil

Sunil the optimum viewing distance of a 40in TV should be 40/.55=72in. In your case if we assume you will lay back on your couch (12 degree of reclining angle) then you should mount your TV at 40+144*0.22=72in

Great site, love your work and ideas. I have successfully mounted my 42inch tv set. What would you suggest for a LG Flatron M197WAP? TIA

Thanks for the very useful post. Can you please suggest height of the tv to be hanged from your formula for a 55 inch TV (height 27.8) , VD = 14 feet, ELH = 40 inch

Hi Sai

About 62 inches

My viewing distance from our 50 inch will be 200″ eye level distance will be 40″ what would the mounting height be? I can’t seem to figure it out. Help please! Lol

Hi Natalie

About 59 inches

Thank you…

At 68″, my particular set would then be 87″ – which is better in my estimation, however aesthetically i believe i’m going to wind up with a 53 or 54″ center of TV mounting… going backwards with function following form.

Thank you again for taking the time to reply.

I read this article with great interest as i found it to be the only one with a formula for precise measurements. Thank you.

I own a 70″ LCD/LED , have an eye height of 40″ and have a viewing distance of approximately 13 – 14 feet (3 to 4 feet longer than the ideal distance of 10.6′) – with your formula, the midpoint of the television should be 77″ – WOW! that would place the top of the television at 8 feet…while i do have close to an 11′ ceiling, this just seems way too high. There are other discussions / recommendations to have the television placed at eye level (my opinion too low) or around 1 foot above eye level – for me 52″ which “feels” more comfortable. the reason i mention this is that when going to a movie theater, i always try to sit just below mid-screen center. Understanding there are always personal preferences and variations involved, i do appreciate the time and thought process that went into this calculation.

LW

Hi Lodge

If you are sitting 14ft away from your TV formula 1 assumes that your TV is 92in instead of 70in. If you combine formula 1 and formula 2 then the TV mounting Height would be (TVMH)=ELH+TVS*0.4. Where ELH would be the Eye Level Height and TVS would be the TV size in inches. In your case if you plug in ELH=40in and TVS=70in the TV mounting height would be 68in to the middle of the TV.

In the above chart, shouldn’t the 65″ tv be 65″ (39+26=65) mounting height, and the 70″ tv be 67″ (39+28=67) mounting height?

Thanks Dan.

For a 103″ Flat TV, what is the Mounting Height ?

Thanks,

About 6.7 ft to the middle of the TV, assuming your eye height from the floor is 40 in when you sit at your couch.

Just re-read you comments and noticed your example states “to the midpoint of TV”, so I’m all set. Thanks, again.

This is helpful, thanks. One question, can you please clarify TVMH (ie. bottom edge of TV, top edge, some other point)? Thanks!
